PUPPET THEATRE

The Expedition follows a hapless adventurer as he attempts to get to New York by boat, a journey that is beset by calamities, and on which he meets a variety of characters such as an elusive zebra-striped beast and a sinister submarine. The work is based on four of Simon Starling's previous pieces - each of which involve building, demolishing and travelling in boats - and which are here combined into a single slapstick narrative complete with a puppet version of the artist.

The play is 25 minutes long, and is suitable for children of three years and up. Admission for children under 16 is free. Adults accompanying children are admitted free (other adults pay standard Charlottenborg admission price: 60 kr / 40 kr concessions). No booking is required.

Performances are at 14.00 every Sunday afternoon from 16 October 2011 to 15 January 2012 (Not including 25 Dec and 1 Jan 2012; and please note that on Sunday 22 January the performance is at 17.00).

GAUGUIN AND POLYNESIA - an elusive paradise

This year's major exhibition at the Glyptotek where visitors can experience Paul Gauguin's masterpieces side by side with the "primitive" art of Polynesia. 24 Sept 2011 - 31 Dec 2011

This autumn, the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek will show more than 50 of the artist's masterpieces with motifs from Tahiti - many of them being exhibited in Denmark for the first time. In addition, the Glyptotek will present around 60 artifacts of Polynesian culture, which inspired him: cult statues, weapons, jewellery (some of it made from human hair and bones) as well as tattoos.

"Gauguin & Polynesia" pursues the artist's idea of the primitive, from his time in Copenhagen and Brittany on to the Tahiti period, which has made him famous.

Oviri - the Wild Man
Gauguin often referred to himself as 'Oviri' - the wild man. He invented and refined his own form of "primitive" art, equal parts abstraction and observation of the natural world. The exhibition displays his intense quest for an artistic method of making statements about the human being, the erotic and the mysteries of life.

An Icon for the Future
Posterity has shown enormous interest in Gauguin's art, his personality and his life. His pictures from Tahiti are today icons of the meeting of European art with alien cultures, and he inspired such painters as Picasso and Matisse. With Gauguin, art becomes seriously modern.

Lectures and Guided Tours
Every Sunday during the exhibition period (24/9 - 31/12), there are free guided tours for visitors at 1.00 p.m. in Danish and English. Admission to the museum on Sundays is free.

TALKING BUSINESS

AVT Business School was founded in 2002. The school is located at 11 Sankt Annæ Plads in central Copenhagen, Denmark, close to the Queen's Palace - Amalienborg.

AVT is an American inspired executive business school for business people. The program is taught in English by
professors from Ivy League American universities such as Harvard, Yale and Berkeley. AVT offers the CBA and the MBA degrees. Both are programs designed for busy professionals and classes meet on a monthly basis. More than 900 executives have completed the CBA and MBA programs at AVT since its inception. Each year, the classes serve over 200 participants, making AVT one of the largest CBA/MBA schools in Denmark.

The CBA Program
The CBA (Certificate in Business Administration) is often referred to as a "mini-MBA." It is an accelerated
executive certificate program that covers the key management topics. The CBA is the first of the two modules that comprise the AVT educational concept and serves as a stepping stone to the MBA program. It lasts six months and is
offered twice a year in August and December.

The MBA Program
The MBA (Master of Business Administration) is an intensive executive postgraduate degree. It is designed to expand the functional knowledge base of general managers as well as hone their ability to lead in an increasingly global business environment.

A High-Impact Learning Experience
The CBA and MBA programs are taught in small, efficient classes that support an interactive and effective learning
environment. AVT has implemented the methods and recommendations of Harvard Business School with respect to Participant-Centered Learning and the Case Learning Method, which Harvard pioneered. In their teaching, our instructors combine the proven Case Learning Method with stimulating lectures to provide optimal opportunities for learning.

Executive Education That Fits Your Life
At AVT, a balanced life makes for an engaged and enthusiastic learner. That's why the CBA program design enables you to easily manage the demands of your studies, work, and family. In addition to conveniently scheduled classes, the programs allow you to complete the CBA and MBA curriculum at a pace that's right for you. You may pursue the MBA immediately upon graduating from the CBA program, or you may delay entrance into the MBA program for up to three years following completion of the CBA. If you wish, you may also decide to stop after graduation from the CBA and focus entirely on your professional endeavours.

Lifelong Learning and Networking
AVT also offers several lifelong learning opportunities that enable graduates to continually refine their knowledge and keep abreast of the latest business concepts and strategies. Some are offered via the Alumni Business Network as 1 or 2-day Master Classes, and some - like the Certificate for Leaders - are available as open enrolment programs.

The Certificate for Leaders
The Certificate for Leaders is offered jointly by AVT Business School and the International University of Monaco. It
allows participants to study critical leadership concepts at the MBA level from their office or home - and at a pace which fits comfortably with their lifestyle.

THAT THEATRE COMPANY
Winner of THE ZOO STORY Competition
Congratulations to Evan Alexander for sending the correct answers to all three questions in the previous newsletter and for winning tickets to The Zoo Story.

The Copenhagen Book and friends also went to see the play and then were invited to a Q&A session afterwards. The performance was truly enjoyable and it was a real pleasure to be able to have a nice chat with the actors while enjoying a drink.

We are organising a similar event in March when That Theatre Company present their next performance, Shakespeare Unplugged.

SHAKESPEARE UNPLUGGED Event - 2 March 2012
The Plot: Two old friends are sitting in The Globe Pub about to see the England soccer team in the final.
The audience sits around the pub drinking their beer and chanting "Eng-er-land, Eng-er-land, Eng-er-land! "Our two heroes question the integrity of the English language. Suddenly there is a power cut and they are thrown into a panic. The barman, Charley, tries in vain to find the match on the radio but instead tunes into a broadcast of A Midsummer Night's Dream. Their anger subsides as they listen to the wonderful language of The Bard of Stratford on Avon. The magic begins, the acting area is transformed when Charley lights the candles on the bar and tables...

Shakespeare Unplugged grounded in the concept that Shakespeare is for everyman in any age seeks to prove that even two 'blokes' in a pub can be turned on to Shakespeare when their usual form of entertainment is turned off.

Come and join us for this exciting event on Friday 2 March 2012 at 8 p.m.

Prices include a drink and a Q&A (Questions and Answers) session after the play with the actors.

Tickets: kr. 180, Students: kr. 125, Student under 25: kr. 60.

Please sign up for this event by 15 December by sending an email to: eva@thecopenhagenbook.dk
