General Practitioner
In Denmark, every citizen has free access to a doctor or GP (General Practitioner). The name of your doctor is listed on your health card (sundhedskort).
You can consult your GP when you are ill or have suffered a minor injury. Your GP can refer you to further treatment or an examination.
You can make an appointment for an examination or for a personal consultation with your GP. Your GP also offers tele-consultations if you need to renew your prescription, etc.
Via your GP’s web site (see www.sundhed.dk/find-behandler), you can book appointments, renew your prescription and send your GP an email.
In the event of acute illness outside of normal surgery hours, you can contact the out-of-hours medical services (lægevagten) at (+45) 38 69 38 69.

For life-threatening situations always ring 112.
If you are unsure about a health issue or injury, and whether you need treatment or not, you can get advice and guidance on this emergency line. Just dial 1813 and you can speak to a specially trained nurse. You can call around the clock, the nurses are always available to give clear and understandable explanations and answers. No question is too big or too small.
